Kick-Ass Series is Returning with Reboot Project

Series director Matthew Vaughn announced his roadmap for the future of Kick-Ass. The new movie will start filming on 2024 and old characters are not likely to return (at least for now).

Thanks to its messed-up sense of humor, Kick-Ass completely reshaped the rising trend of superhero movies in 2010. The movie, which was adapted from the comic book series of the same name by the comic legends Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., managed to achieve a huge success on box office. Although the sequel movie could not carry the success of its forerunner, fans were still hopeful for possible new Kick-Ass projects.

The series producer and director Matthew Vaughn had been talking about his intention of returning to the Kick-Ass franchise for a while. Vaughn, who had founded his own production company Marv Films, previously mentioned that he planned to go back to the world of Kick-Ass after he regained the rights of the franchise. After focusing on globally successful Kingsman movies for a few years, Vaughn finally made the long-awaited announcement at New York Comic Con: The new Kick-Ass movie is finally in production!

Kick-Ass movie

It seems like the new Kick-Ass movie will be a reboot project. According to Vaughn, old leading actors Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will not return for the reboot. The torch will be passed on to new faces, but old characters may return in sequel movies. Filming will begin in 2024 if everything goes according to schedule.

“Kick-Ass sort of changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we’re doing it again. So it’s none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass. We’d like to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot is just going off on a tangent that I really can’t talk about. But it’s fun.”

Kick-Ass characters

The actors, director, and screenwriter are yet to be announced. The first movie was helmed by Vaughn himself. The second Kick-Ass movie was handed to Jeff Wadlow but harshly criticized by both fans and critics. Vaughn was focused on Kingsman around that time.

The famous director probably will not come back to the director’s seat as he is currently working on the new Kingsman movie The Blue Blood. But it is almost certain that he will be more involved in the production stage.
