For instance, the Moral Compass system no longer restricts players; in fact, it helps facilitate versatile role-playing, just as initially planned. The game’s storytelling was expected to shine, and indeed, it has become a captivating experience that immerses players and keeps them engaged with its narrative.

For our remaining readers, let me share a few features of the game without spoiling its surprises. This way, I can stand behind my claim that the game is worth the wait and play.

Why Anticipate Broken Roads?

We are fans of fantasy role-playing games, and Broken Roads truly provides an opportunity for role-playing. Moreover, it doesn’t limit us to playing just a good or bad character. We constantly decide how we want our character to be in the morally gray areas. Whatever we choose, the story continues, but every action comes with a consequence. Altruistic deeds may lead to disaster, while selfish actions could bring rewards for everyone. A Utilitarian, thinking of everyone’s well-being, can ruthlessly violate the rights of an individual, while a humanitarian may be as useful as a piece of chewed gum that someone else discarded in some situations.

Let me share a scene that amused me: Entering a region and intending to explore, I’m scanning the entire map with the mouse, clicking on every clickable spot. At the end of the investigation, I have little information in my hands. Ready to leave the map, one of my companions asks, “Did you find anything important?” A feeling of doubt hits me, “Hold on, let me look again,” I say, and in this re-scan, I discover a new detail. Okay, ready to leave this time. The companion asks, “Are we going then?” COME ON! We don’t have any information, task, or reason to be here. We stumbled upon this place while walking, got curious, and investigated. Did I search for everything that needed to be investigated? Did I click on everything clickable? I don’t know! Maybe the companion innocently asks, just to be psychologically prepared for the long walk ahead. This occasional lack of direction in the game, not guiding us with quest markers and detailed steps, provides a realistic and enjoyable role-playing opportunity.

Sound, Music, and Emotions

I mentioned before that Tim Sunderland, the audio lead at Drop Bear Bytes invented musical instruments using materials he thought wouldn’t be hard to find in a post-apocalyptic setting. I thought they were invented only to inspire the game’s soundtracks. However, they’ve also integrated these instruments into the game itself! Moreover, we can interact with these instruments and hear how they sound.

The voice acting is also well done. In Broken Roads, we can connect with NPCs traveling with us. We can feel and empathize with them. Additionally, Broken Roads manages to be a game that we can get lost in for hours.

What Have They Added to the Game Since the Demo?

Unfortunately for us, the game doesn’t have Turkish language support. Moreover, using Australian English may alienate even those who are confident in American English. Drop Bear Bytes assured us before that we shouldn’t worry about this, and during the preview, I learned why. They added explanations for all terms that might be unfamiliar to us, as seen in the image below. Thanks to Broken Roads, we will not only become familiar with Australia’s towns, humor, and culture but also its language.

I had the chance to try out the new origin stories during the preview. The demo only allowed us to play as a Hired Gun. This time, I chose the Surveyor—a wandering adventurer and cartographer reporting on what’s happening in each region. Morally, I adopted a Machiavellian view—whatever is necessary for my survival is permissible. I was pleased to see that many things in the game changed, from the reason for my arrival at Bally Bally Hall to what topics I could discuss with people, based on my character’s choices.

By the way, as a successful Surveyor, you can discover various references. (Hint: Contemplating the relationship between solar panels and darkness is possible.)

In summary, Broken Roads is not one of those shallow RPGs that set out with big dreams and get stuck on the road when the engine breaks down. It is set to please both isometric RPG enthusiasts and those who have a soft spot for Fallout. It might not have a groundbreaking effect as Disco Elysium or Baldur’s Gate 3, but with features like the moral compass system, fun and diverse quests, and the freedom it gives us in the heart of Australia, it will undoubtedly win your heart.

Why Was it Delayed, What Was Missing?

They haven’t had enough opportunity to thoroughly test some mechanics, decisions, and character types.

For example, there’s a personality trait called “Better Feared Than Loved.” You can become the kind of troublemaker that no one wants to mess with. Therefore, in every fight you enter, there’s a 50% chance that enemies will fear you and run away. Thematically fantastic, but gameplay-wise, it’s an unbalanced feature. While everyone turns their backs on you and runs away, you’re shooting them in the back. This loses its fun after a point. Therefore, they need to reduce the ratio or adjust the game mechanics.

Broken Roads is visually stunning. Both the details and the style of its visuals make examining every inch of the maps enjoyable. However, the animations aren’t as fantastic yet. Moreover, some part of the storytelling is done through animations without dialogue. Just as we sometimes nod instead of speaking, the game has such non-verbal interactions. (Which, in my opinion, is an amazing choice.) So, places where the animation is not fluid are a bit noticeable in the game’s current state.

Essentially, the combat system needs adjustment. We discussed in our interview that they redesigned the combat mechanics from scratch. Therefore, they haven’t had enough opportunity to thoroughly test these mechanics as well as they did with the rest of the game. If you remember, the weapons used, whether or not you’re drunk, and even the character’s traits affect fights (like enemies running away from you), so there are many scenarios to test.

Uncle Jack Charles’s voice was also missing… I hoped to hear more of the late great voice actor in the game.

Lastly, hats were missing! One of the biggest shortcomings of a game is not allowing players to wear hats, especially when other characters can stroll around wearing cool ones.

Is Delay Good for the Game?

Yes, we think so! Because these issues I mentioned are not un-fixable bugs or shortcomings. When they are fixed, we will enjoy playing Broken Roads. Rather than our enjoyment being spoiled by encountering bugs while playing and waiting for a patch frustrated, I think it’s better to keep waiting for a strong release.

The story and quests are already fun, you’ll like them. They just need to make sure that players won’t trip up with mechanical glitches during their journey on these broken roads…

Disco Elysium: One of the Best-Written Games of All Time

Firstly, it’s important to note that Disco Elysium is not for RPG enthusiasts seeking action or combat scenes. Disco Elysium is often likened to old-school RPGs that gained fame in the late ’90s.

In this entirely dialogue-based game, you engage in conversations with intricately written realistic characters. And sometimes, with the voices inside your head.

Sometimes your inner thoughts converse with your outer voice.

Sometimes you talk with your tie.

And sometimes the city talks to you.

In essence, there’s a lot of talking in the game. I’m not saying there’s no combat, but it’s not a significant aspect. When talking about old-school RPGs, don’t expect something like Baldur’s Gate. Among old-school RPGs, Disco Elysium provides an experience closest to Planescape: Torment in terms of the emotions it evokes in players.

Those who love story-driven games and enjoy character interactions in BioWare’s RPGs are likely to be enchanted by this game.

Character Sheet

At the beginning of the game, as in many RPGs, you allocate points to your attributes to create your character. We have four ability groups: Intellect, Psyche, Physique, and Motorics.

Intellect involves abilities like knowing things, reasoning, and recalling information. Features like Rhetoric and Conceptualization in this group add depth to the game. Conceptualization is the ability to see art in the world, a kind of poetry. Rhetoric is the ability to understand implied meanings. Since the game is dialogue-based, guidance from Rhetoric such as “actually, he meant this” can be quite helpful.

Psyche involves abilities related to our mental state. For example, Volution is our ability to keep our morale high. It’s the inner voice saying, “You’re a champion, you can do it, you’ll handle it. Don’t let these things get to you.” Inland Empire is the inner voice contributing interesting insights. Esprit de Corps helps us sense how policing should be done since we remember nothing about being a police officer… or anything related to our life in the world.

Physique includes our physical abilities such as endurance and strength. Shivers, initially a bit hard to understand, allows us to feel the dynamics of the city in our body, becoming one with the city. It’s an interesting, almost supernatural ability.

Motorics involves perceiving our surroundings, adjusting our posture, and reacting quickly.

How Does Disco Elysium Begin?

With nothing. Only, warm primordial blackness.

You loved that, didn’t you?

If you didn’t, it wouldn’t have started like that. Apparently, you’ve walked a path leading to darkness and nothingness. You’ve fought against everything else, running into the arms of nothingness. Congratulations, you’re the victor. You don’t remember anything now. Absolutely nothing. All that’s left is a dark void.

They tell you that you’re a cop. A detective? They talk about a body. A week-old corpse? Hanging from a… tree? Lynched. A week ago? You were responsible for taking down the body. Why haven’t you done it for days?

What have you been doing here for days without even taking down the body?

What? Don’t you remember?

Do I have to read a lot?

When the game was released in 2019, it received very positive reviews. Before the update that included voiceovers for all the text in the game, there were two types of reactions: Those who fell in love with the game and those who got bored of reading.

There is indeed a lot of text in the game because it’s entirely dialogue-based. Sometimes a dialogue with just one NPC can take almost two hours in real life. Words flow. Then something crosses your mind, and you drift into thoughts. The cacophony of voices in your head overwhelms the dialogue with the person in front of you. Then the character you’re talking to looks at you and says,

“Are you okay, officer?”

You’re not.

Not okay.

With the update, having all the text listenable makes the gameplay much more comfortable. By the way, voiceovers are only available in English. If you can understand English conversations without reading, the pain of reading is pretty reduced, at least for your eyes. There’s nothing to be done about mental and emotional pain.

It’s worth noting that the voice actors are amazing. Each inner voice skillfully conveys the emotion it represents. The characters have tones that match their personalities. The people involved in the game’s production, including the story writer Robert Kurvitz, the artist Aleksander Rostov, and the voice actors, including Lenval Brown, have done an excellent job.

And this is the team’s first game.

Will I get bored?

No. If you enjoy reading books, you won’t get bored. Because the game’s story is crafted with quality that surpasses most novels out there.

If you quickly skip scenes and conversations that show the story in the games you play, if you’re counting the seconds for the action to start, there’s a chance you might get bored.

If you feel the need to learn and remember everything told to you, there’s a chance you might get bored with the information overload. However, some players really enjoy these narratives. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that your character has just come from nothingness. They don’t feel obliged to listen to a boring conversation. They want to return to the warm and peaceful embrace of blackness. You can cut the conversation by pressing “I’ve heard enough” to stop hearing more. Of course, some characters’ hearts might be broken, but who cares? Hasn’t your heart been broken too?

The game offers an emotional feast. You laugh, bursting into laughter. In the character’s situation, you laugh at the voices in the character’s head, to yourself even. You laugh while playing the game. You laugh at the character. You laugh at other characters. You become one with the character and laugh together. It’s so funny! Right? Then while laughing, a feeling, a thought comes to your mind. You start feeling sad. Melancholy. Nostalgia. Sorrow. Loneliness. Hopelessness. Exclusion. Failure. Disappointment. Then you realize, you don’t remember any of it. Shame.

Playing the game is exactly like this experience. You are swept away from one emotion to another. Even if you’re laughing, underneath it all, that melancholy, the longing for disco days, never goes away. The character is sad, and you can feel it. This sadness infects you. You feel sad while playing the game. You worry, cry, laugh. Sometimes, you even scream in anger or astonishment. If the other residents of the house don’t know you’re playing a game, they come and ask,

“Are you okay, o’ dear?”

when you’re sitting in front of the screen.

You might find yourself singing ballads for things that probably never even happened. And hats off to the writers, seriously! Turning tiny details into an avalanche of emotions? If you look closely, you’ll see details everywhere, each whispering its own sad story. Of course, you might not want to look that closely. I mean, how much misery, poverty, and unhappiness can one take? Ever thought about closing your eyes, taking a break, and chilling in the warm embrace of primordial blackness and nothingness?

In Disco Elysium, almost all characters are crafted with depth. Their background is full of history, they probably also have voices in their heads, and they feel alive with their emotions that hit you deep. It’s not just that they are unforgettable; they also win a permanent place in your heart. They are full of life and life experience.

After all, everyone’s been through something. And isn’t that what matters the most?

Revachol. That’s the name of the city we’re in. Every resident, every crumbled wall, and even the mailbox has seen some stuff. Witness so much pain, and anyone would go insane. The city’s gone mad ages ago. Now, every nook of its madness is just waiting to be explored. It’s dying to be discovered! Can’t call them side quests, though. They’re more like pleas for help from the city to a cop who’s shown up to assist.

But it’s not always melancholy in the city’s hidden corners. Sometimes, you find dance parties in the most unexpected places. Or an empty bottle, maybe a few cents on the curb. And sometimes, you stumble upon your own past, wandering the streets. Of course, your past lives on the streets, homeless and alone. Even you haven’t claimed it, left it to rot on the streets. The city embraced it. Because Revachol doesn’t exclude anyone.

The city introduces itself in a way pretty similar to how its residents do. You may hate it as you get to know it more or fall in love with it. It’s your call, your decision. No one can tell you what to do. But you can tell people what to do. You’re a cop, after all. A bit of an unconventional cop, yes. But then again…

Cops Come In All Shapes and Sizes

What kind of character you’ll be in the game depends on which voices in your head you agree with and which ones you ignore. There’s also this section in the game called the “Thought Cabinet.” From there, you can pick what kind of thoughts you want to occupy your mind. Your thoughts, how you talk to people, which inner voice you listen to—all these factors shape your character and your cop style.

The game’s tagline sums it up: What kind of cop are you?

If you start apologizing to Revachol for embracing the sadness and melancholy that envelops you, adding your own sorrow to the city in pain, you’ll transform into the “sad cop” type.

Maybe you want to become a star. The most beloved, coolest, brightest star in Revachol. Doesn’t the city deserve a disco? The “superstar cop” type is an incredibly fun option.

You can ignore the screams of your inner voices and the city’s inner conflicts. Focusing on the task at hand, the murder you need to solve, feels like a remedy for sorrow. It’s time to pull yourself together, isn’t it? Yes, you can do that. No one can judge you. After all, being a “boring cop” is still a copotype.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

In this game, we play a witch who is condemned to solitude. The reason we were exiled from the witch community we were a part of is because of our powers. They also took the tarot deck from Fortuna. So the game starts with us making a pact with an entity we should never talk to and creating our own tarot deck. As we choose what the tarot cards mean, we are bending the fate of the people and events whose tarot we will look at.

Norco

Norco is one of the games on sale at the event and deserves attention. In this sci-fi story, we return to our family home that we angrily left and thought we would never return. An empty house and a big disappointment awaits us. Because we left because we were angry with our mother and she passed away quietly while we were gone. Our little brother, who begged us not to leave, is nowhere to be seen.

The most famous case of Encephalitis lethargica was that of a young girl who suddenly became paralyzed from the waist down while returning home from a concert, falling asleep half an hour later. This patient, after sleeping for 12 days, never woke up again and passed away.

This condition did not remain an isolated medical curiosity but turned into an epidemic. It spread to nearly one million people in Europe and America, causing the death of the majority of those affected.

Patients were typically between the ages of 15 and 35. Afflicted individuals often felt constantly tired and had a persistent desire to sleep, although unlike in the series, they were not completely unable to wake up. They could open their eyes and perform some movements, but they never truly felt fully awake.

For instance, in the video below, you can see a sleep disorder patient who hears the command “touch your nose” and is able to follow it even while asleep. Patients felt that their minds remained alert even while asleep, and they could perceive what was happening around them. However, even if they managed to wake up, they couldn’t stay awake for long. When they tried to stand, they couldn’t maintain their balance and would collapse to the ground.

Sleep disorder didn’t manifest the same symptoms in everyone. The psychiatrists and doctors of the time categorized patients into three groups.

The first group includes those who were in a constant state of sleep, similar to the individuals in the video above. The second group consists of those who couldn’t sleep at all. This group suffered from such severe insomnia that even when awake, they wandered around like spirits. Because they couldn’t fall asleep, their bodies became exhausted, their senses dulled, and their memories were impaired. The third group is the rarest: they remained motionless like statues. Most of them fell into a coma and couldn’t wake up for years. So, if we were to place the princess from the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale into one of these groups, it would be the third one.

How Did Sleep Disorder Begin? When and Where?

The first case of sleep disorder was a soldier returning from World War I in 1915. The symptoms were first reported by Constantin von Economo, a neurologist from Vienna, in 1917. At first, most of the patients were soldiers, so doctors initially suspected it might be a side effect of mustard gas. However, the disease also began to spread among civilians, eliminating the possibility of the mustard gas effect.

Between 1915 and 1940, nearly one million people in many countries in Europe and America contracted the sleep disorder. They couldn’t determine the cause of this epidemic then, and we still don’t know it today. It’s important to note that the Spanish flu pandemic was also happening during those years. As a result, many patients didn’t receive the necessary attention and care, and most died due to respiratory failure. Nevertheless, some patients continued to sleep for 30-40 years without experiencing respiratory problems.

It is estimated that 40% of the patients died in their sleep, 25% remained in a vegetative state, 26% woke up but did not fully recover from the symptoms, and only 14% managed to overcome the disease.

Approximately 10 years after the first case of sleep disorder was observed, the epidemic ended. Between 1940 and 2010, only 14 people worldwide exhibited symptoms that fit the description of this disease.

What Caused Sleep Disorder and How Did It Become an Epidemic?

We still don’t have answers to these questions today.

When the brains of deceased patients were examined, formal and color changes were observed. This indicates that the disease has neurological and physical causes or effects.

Researchers initially thought the cause could be toxic, bacterial, or genetic. However, as cases increased and experiments were conducted, all their theories were debunked one by one. No evidence was found to support the idea that the disease is genetic. The theory of a toxic effect localized to one region was invalidated because the disease spread to many countries. Additionally, experiments conducted on animals and humans to observe the transmission of the disease also failed. Therefore, the source and transmission of the disease have never been uncovered.

For instance, in 1919, girls and caregivers living in an orphanage for girls fell ill one by one within two weeks. Out of 21 girls, 12 of them contracted the sleep disorder. Six of them passed away within the first 10 days. However, many families who lived in the same house with the patients never got sick.

Because the structural changes in the brain resembled Parkinson’s disease, doctors experimentally used Parkinson’s medications on the patients. They observed that one medication could awaken patients who had been asleep for more than 30 years.
